Things To Know When Traveling To An Island In Hurricane Season
For years the Caribbeans have been the chosen destination for those travelers looking to experience a one-of-a-kind relaxing vacation. But before picking the resort you will be staying at; it is important for visitors to fully understand that they might find themselves within unexpected situations. The best time to visit some of the Caribbean islands are from June till November but from mid-August to early October you might have a high chance of encountering possible bad weather. This should not influence your vacation but if you are planning to visit the area during the hurricane season, it is important to keep in mind some things.
It does not matter what type of traveler you are because when it comes to facing a hurricane you might want to find yourself prepared. For you brave travelers out there, who have booked a Caribbean vacation amid the hurricane season, here is a list of suggestions to follow to be prepared in case mother nature decides to intervene.
Be safe, don’t skip on travel insurance!
These days when booking your flight and accommodation is very easy to add trip protection for a small additional supplement. I know there are some of you out there that might think is not worthy because where they are staying is safe, but when it comes to mother nature is better to opt for the best protection you can get your hands on. Some insurance companies do not only cover cancellation but also offer additional services such as medical insurance. So I highly suggest you not be stingy when it comes to traveling therefore travel insurance is something that should not be skipped. Keep in mind that your safety matters so before going ahead and booking your vacation we suggest you check with your travel agency for the best travel insurances you can access to.
Stay updated and always check the news!
Is true that when you are away for a long-awaited vacation, you want to focus on your wellbeing and isolate yourself from any possible thing that could ruin it. I would agree with you in normal situations but when it comes to traveling to the Caribbeans during the hurricane season, you might want to listen to weather reports. This is when your insurance is convenient as in case there is a prediction of the situation getting worse, people can still pack their things and leave earlier. I know this means to cut the trip short but you can always come back!
Pack extra wisely!
I understand that packing can be quite stressful especially when traveling to a foreign country, but you might want to add special care when gathering all your things when considering "weather emergencies". So, what objects should you not miss putting in your luggage? Given the current pandemic situation, I would say anti-bacterial wipes. These are very useful wherever you go and in case you do not have water, you can use them for your hands. Add a personalized First Aid Kit: extra band-aid, aspirins, and medication that you cannot easily find. Try to fit everything in a small bag that you can easily purchase within your local pharmacy. When a hurricane strikes out, you might find yourself without available power, having a portable Solar Powered USB charger is not a bad idea. At the end of the day, you can charge it when at the beach and later one use it for your devices. A tiny flashlight is something that we usually do not pack with us but for a journey of this kind, I suggest you get at least a small one just in case you find yourself amid the dark. Another item to bring along is a power bank. When we use our phone to check the time and location of places, show our tickets, and pay for things, is easy to see how fast the battery dies. The best thing to do is to always have a power bank along with you. My suggestion is that everyone traveling with you should have their own. By doing so you will always have at least one fully charged. Last but not least, more like a suggestion rather than an object, after a day spent out exploring, do not forget to put in charge your devices. Quite frankly it often happens that we find ourselves without any charged device just because we got back to the hotel and we are tired.
Bring warm clothes
I know that at first, this might sound like a bit of weird advice but when it comes to hurricanes you have to consider that you might be exposed to windy days. To avoid falling sick, try to be prepared by packing with you at least a tracksuit to wear in case the weather drastically changes. Women are usually the ones always prepared for this kind of situation but if you are a group of males going on a trip together, I highly suggest you all put your manly side away and pack a warm jumper. Would you rather have one in your luggage or continuously regret not bringing one with you since the beginning, right?
Stuck up your room with food!
If I had to guess the first thing that all of you travelers out there do as soon as you enter your room, I would answer “to check how comfy the bed is”. Am I wrong? Well from now on is better you start focusing on something else, such as food!
Resorts are always equipped with the best restaurants you will ever come across and looking for food to eat is certainly something to not worry about while on vacation. But what can you do when there is a small chance that you might cross paths with a hurricane? Well, let me tell you something! As soon as you reach out to the location you are staying at, try to lookup for a nearby grocery store where to purchase food to keep in your room. All rooms are equipped with minibars and little fridges, therefore finding where to put food should not be an issue. Ah! Stuck up on water, the more the merrier!
Pay close attention to warnings and stay inside till given all-clear
As human beings, we often tend to have too much confidence in our skills which often leads us to pass over possible warnings. When staying in a resort in the Caribbean during the hurricane season, is better to listen carefully to the hotel's staff. Try to stay alert for any possible communication that might be given and follow all the instructions. In case of a hurricane hitting the area where you are vacationing, stay within your own room and wait for signals confirming that the worse has passed.
Traveling to the Caribbean during the Hurricane Season might sound dangerous for some but this does not mean that people do not enjoy their vacation. If you take all the precautions and carefully prepare yourself for possible scenarios, I am sure you will be able to easily overcome the difficult time and have a good moment while in the Caribbean.
